A day tour to the north of the Callejon de Huaylas through the villages of Carhuaz, Yungay, Caraz and Tarica with sights and experiences that include the imposing Nevado Huascarán, the highest mountain of Perú at 6,768m, homemade ice-cream in Carhuaz and the beautiful turquoise lake Chinancocha of Llanganuco in the Huascarán National Park.

Departing Huaraz about 9:00am, you drive north in the Callejon de Huaylas (Callejon Valley) with the first stop at Carhuaz where you visit the picturesque principal main square and church. Carhuaz is also well-known for its homemade ice cream made from fruits and liqueurs.

Yungay was severely affected by the earthquake in 1970 with an avalanche from Mt Huascarán that buried the city. This site is now a memorial known as Campo Santo (sacred land) which you visit next.

Ascending up to the Quebrada Llanganuco, you enter the Huascarán National Park and shortly after the entrance you reach the incredible turquoise lake of Chinancocha. There you have the opportunity to take a little stroll along the south-western lakeshore and take some photos. Descending back down into the Callejon de Huaylas via Yungay, we continue north to Caraz. On the way there is opportunity to have lunch (not included). In Caraz you will visit the main square and church, you also try out the sweet and delicious manjar blanco (made from condensed milk). For those who just want to enjoy the craftsmanship and/or buy some souvenirs, there is a stop at Tarica on the way back to Huaraz, which is renowned for its arts and crafts, and then finish your day around 7pm.

The Llanganuco lakes are at an altitude of 3,800m and prior acclimatisation is recommended.

  • The roads from Yungay to the lakes of Llanganuco in the Huascarán National Park are dirt roads and some sections of this road might be bumpy in addition to winding sections in the ascent/descent to and from the lakes.
  • Maria Josefa trail to Laguna Chinancocha (Huascarán National Park): in the event you don’t physically feel up for the 1,5-2 hour trail walk, you may continue directly to the lake with the vehicle; the rest of us will meet you there.

Recommendations for Best Seasons

The best time is from mid-April to late September or early October.  April, May and June are the best months for lovers of flowers and green landscape. July through August are the best months for blue sky & also an excellent period for photographers (warm colours and clear blue skies are great!). From September to April you get a mixed sunny and pretty cloudy landscape.

The entire Cordillera Blanca has a semi-dry and semi-cold climate, with an average maximum temperature of 23.9° C (75.0° F) and a minimum of 1.1° C (33.98° F). The climate is very unpredictable, even in the dry season it can rain. During the days it can vary from hot to very frigid temperatures, included rain and strong winds or snow over 4800 meters above sea level. It usually starts getting cloudy more often in early September. October and November are the months when after 2-3pm you can count on afternoon showers.
